YONKERS – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano launched a campaign Monday to lobby state leaders for help rebuilding the city’s troubled school district.
From damaged buildings to overcrowded classrooms, Yonkers schools are crumbling, he says.
Some classrooms at Gorton High School don’t have windows or ventilation, and there are electrical wires hanging from the ceiling.
The first phase of the comprehensive plan is to build three new schools to ease overcrowding and also to make initial repairs to existing structures.
If Yonkers gets the funding from New York state, the city expects it would take 13 years to complete the project.
